Getting a solar system for your electricity requirement can not only reduce your power bill but can also give you a sense of satisfaction towards your contribution to the environment. However, this looks like a good idea but it can be an expensive proposition. There are two configurations you need to evaluate before getting a solar system.
1. Grid-Tied System: It is a solar system which is connected to the utility power grid and does not have a battery in it. So the power being generated is injected into the grid while you continue to use power from utility grid as per your requirement. A net consumption is then taken into consideration while calculating electricity bill. Here, the system cost and installation cost is less, since back up components are not required. This also reduces maintenance cost. Moreover, there is no constraint of not able to use excess generated electricity. So more you generate, more you can feed into the grid.
2. Stand-alone systems: When you completely dependent on your solar system for all your energy needs. This requires more capital investment, but it is effective when there is no reliable power supply from the utility company.
